Baltyk Tower - MVRDV

MVRDV debut in Poland with Baltyk Tower

Baltyk Tower cleverly circumvents Poznań planning restrictions (and features a one room hotel)

Dutch architecture practice MVRDV seems to be everywhere, but not, until now, in Poland. However it's just got its teeth into an 18-storey tower in Poznań’s city centre. The studio is known for enjoying pushing the envelope when it comes to form, and the Baltyk Tower is no exception. Plans unveiled so far for the structure show a glazed high-rise that’s tiered on one side and cut away at ground level on the other. However, the design isn’t creative wilfulness but part of the brief. The shape and height, says MVRDV, was dictated by the city’s tough planning restrictions.

Baltyk Tower will house 12.000m² of offices, along with some shops and a ‘panorama restaurant’ with a single hotel room attached. All that floor-to-ceiling glass means the occupants will need some protection, hence the vertical louvres of glass fibre concrete, which the architects hope will soften the impact of the sun without losing the pleasing views over the city and zoo.
