Harland Miller Fuck Art Let's Dance (2011)

Harland Miller closes White Cube Hoxton

The British artist's show, opening today at The White Cube Hoxton Square, will be the London gallery's last

It was, for many, the gallery that epitomised the cool, East End art scene. So, it is perhaps fitting that, when gallerist Jay Jopling chose to close White Cube Hoxton Square this year, he picked Harland Miller's show as the valedictory exhibit.

Miller has been a fixture on the London art scene for longer than the gallery, established in 2000, has been around. We remember his expressive murals decorating the walls of a couple of late 80s musicians' London squats Yet Miller's work, often a sardonic take on artistic achievement and failure, lampoons the very world that gives him succour, while simultaneously expressing a nostalgia for the mid-to-late 20th century, a period that many of Miller's generation (he was born in 1964) also hanker after.

The Next Life's On Me features a selection of paintings of old Penguin book covers – Miller himself had a novel published in 2000 – mixed in with a series of figurative works rich with 1970s mise-en-scene. If you're in London, do try to head down to the show, which will be on until December 22. It's bound to be an engaging exhibition, as well as a fitting endnote to a particular chapter in London's rich art story.
