Pipilotti Rist and The New Museum create AR works for Apple

New Museum and tech titan commission augmented reality works from seven contemporary artists

Going to get your phone sorted out at the Genius Bar this month? Then maybe take in a little contemporary art. This month Apple has teamed up with the New Museum to offer art lovers the chance to enjoy a series of augmented reality works, both inside Apple Stores and – on a greater scale – within major public spaces in cities around the globe.

The New Museum artistic director and Phaidon author Massimiliano Gioni has helped to select seven artists - Pipilotti Rist, Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg, Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, and Carsten Höller - to participate in the project, which is free to the public.

From 10 August, visitors to Apple Stores will be able to view Nick Cave’s sensual AR artwork Amass, via their phone's [AR]T viewer app.

Meanwhile, in New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo and San Francisco, shoppers will also be able borrow phones and headsets, and sign up for [AR]T to see larger scale works, such as Rists’s International Liquid Finger Prayer, or Giorno’s contemplative text works, Now at the Dawn of My Life, in places such as London’s Trafalgar Square, San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens or New York’s Grand Army Plaza in Central Park.

“The New Museum has always led at the intersection of art and tech and we could not have asked for a better partner in Apple to support the fantastic visions of these pioneering artists,” said the New Museum’s Toby Devan Lewis. “Augmented reality is a medium ripe for dynamic and visual storytelling that can extend an artist’s practice beyond the studio or the gallery and into the urban fabric.”
