Share the love (and art) this World Book Day with My Art Book of Friendship
Our new title combines great art with an excellent read-along lesson in making friends
Book lovers across the globe (though for some reason not the UK and Ireland) like to celebrate reading on World Book Day, 23 April . It’s also commonly a day when younger readers are encouraged to improve their textual skills, and demonstrate their love of the printed page.
This year, we’d like to encourage children and their parents to broaden out those interests just a little, by considering a book that helps younger readers also gain a grasp of the importance of friendship, and a few of the many beautiful pictures created by some of the best-known figures in art.
Our new kids title, My Art Book of Friendship, collects together paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures by all-star artists from across the centuries and across the world - all in aid of celebrating the concept of friendship.
Following on from similar charming board-book titles covering Happiness, Love, and Sleep, this 48-page publication guides the youngest of readers through simple ideas about why we should value friends, what friends often do together and how friends make us feel.
Each of these simple concepts are illustrated with a beautiful (and beautifully chosen) work that will both expand a young reader's understanding of social set-ups and widen their aesthetic comprehension.
There are classic photographs by such famed snappers as Gordon Parks, crisp canvases from contemporary art stars including Jonas Wood, familiar images from Keith Haring and Damien Hirst, as well as plenty less-well-known, though equally noteworthy, inclusions.
A brief, tender, read-aloud text accompanies each work, and the work's title and artist's name are included as secondary references.
