How to mix the perfect autumn cocktail

As Daylight Saving ends it's time to enjoy an autumnal drink, courtesy of our new book Regarding Cocktails

Clocks fall back an hour this weekend in the United States, as the country shifts from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time, a jump many in Europe made last weekend.

If you, like many, are savouring the first few weeks of dark autumn evenings, then may we suggest you pair your fall with this wonderful drink, as concocted by the late Sasha Petraske, widely regarded as the man who put style and sophistication back into New York’s cocktail scene. It's one of many great cocktails featured in our new book Regarding Cocktails.

“If the shawl-collar cardigan were a cocktail, it would be this one,” writes Petraske’s wife, Georgette Moger-Petraske. “Sasha's Apple Jack was a play on the original cocktail from The Savoy Cocktail Book (from 1930). Much like his favourite sartorial standby, Sasha adored this drink on a crisp fall evening, but he also found it a fine choice to hunker down with deep into winter. Whereas the Savoy’s version is simply half an ounce each of Italian vermouth and Calvados shaken with ice, along with a dash of Angostura bitters, and strained into a coupe, Sasha’s imparts a finely balanced cornucopia of spices and autumn fruit by way of apple cider and applejack.”
