Fäviken: 4015 Days, Beginning to End

Fäviken: 4015 Days, Beginning to End is one of the Observer’s Great food books for 2020

Allan Jenkins, editor of Observer Food Monthly, admires the way the chef is equally skilled whether writing or cooking

Allan Jenkins is no stanger good food, nor good food writing. So Jenkins–editor of Observer Food Monthly– is right, when he states in his review of Fäviken: 4015 Days, Beginning to End, that “there are cooks who can write and, of course, writers who can cook.”

Moreover, Jenkins is also correct when he acknowledges in his review that chef and author Magnus Nilsson “is both”, and that this new book, one of the Observers 10 Great food books of 2020, “is something of a hybrid.”

“The book is a collection of musings, memoir and a completist list of every dish cooked at his decade-defining cult restaurant Faviken.” Jenkins finds something to admire in every part of this excellent list of ingredients, though he singles out special praise for Nilsson’s biggest reveal. “Perhaps the most compelling piece chronicles the breakdown that preceded the decision to close the restaurant after 11 years.”
