Die Shweizer - Andreas Herzau

René Burri's 'The Germans' inspires Andreas Herzau's 'The Swiss'

German photographer Andreas Herzau was born in 1962, the same year that Swiss photographer René Burri's series The Germans was published. Guess what he's done. . .

The German photographer Andreas Herzau was born in 1962, the year that “The Germans”, a collection of images by Swiss photographer René Burri, was published. Fifty years later, Herzau hit the road in search of “The Swiss”. The results can be seen on his website and pretty good they are too.

Our pictures provide a first glimpse of his ongoing project which looks not only at the biographical connection of the two photographers but also the current issue of German emigration to Switzerland.

In the year 1962, when I was born, the Swiss photographer Rene Burri published his book "Die Deutschen" (The Germans). Now 50 Years later I start for a return visit to have a look at this small extravagant country," Herzau writes on his website. It's also a convenient excuse (Should one ever be needed) for us to point you at René's series which you can see in its entirety on the Magnum Photos site. And take a look at our fine selection of books with this master photographer.
